Scarlet Misery

By Mikelena Panchesin

Wispy locks of gold

frame a chubby little face

Cheeks like flamingos blossom

from the soil that is her smile

Eyes like sinks,

drip

drip

drip

portray the joy that fuels her grin.

A raw heart,

pulsing,

overflowing with happiness,

lies behind her plastic Barbie necklace.

A heart so young,

soft,

easily corrupted.

Words spoken, actions done

planted a seed of

malevolence.

Friends betrayed,

homes abandoned,

relationships undone like the laces of a shoe.

Years passed,

a tree grew,

quick and violent,

sprouting burrs and needles

every which way.

The girl’s heart inched closer,

closer,

to a thorn,

massive and serrated.

Everyday it gets nearer,

nearer,

and one day,

perhaps on her birthday,

perhaps over dinner,

perhaps in her sleep,

the thorn will meet flesh

and rip her heart right open.
