Things She Left Behind

By Annika Laver

She left behind her cold body

Lying on the floor

Of her bathroom

In her small house

She left behind her dreams

As empty

As the bottle of sleeping spills

She clutched in her stiff hand

She left behind a note

Or reasons why

Stuck to her bathroom mirror

By frantic shaky hands

She left behind her wishes

Which she cast away

Upon learning

That shooting stars didn’t exist

She left behind her innocence

An old state thing

She hadn’t touched

In a while

She left behind tear drops

Oceans and oceans of them

Collected after years

Of quiet crying

She left behind a smile

Fake and plastic

The one she plastered on

Every morning before school

She left behind friends

Hurt and confused

That the girl they knew

Was gone

She left behind a family

Whose image of her

Shattered and dissolved away

When they found her

And then there was me

A friend left wondering

Why I didn’t hear the cries

Sooner

Not that it mattered

Not anymore

Now I was just another thing

She left behind
