The 2018 Winter Olympics took place in Pyeongchang, South Korea. An extremely popular event that takes place at the Winter Olympics is snowboarding which became part of the Olympic games in 1998. This sport is a combination of surfing, skiing, and skateboarding. There are several snowboarding events that take place at the Olympics such as the halfpipe, parallel slalom, and snowboard cross. There is also a mixed event called team ski-snowboard cross. The United States had a total of 25 snowboarders competing this year with 11 men and 14 women. The United States won four gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal. Both the men and women’s slopestyle and the men and women’s halfpipe were won by team USA.

There are a total of six seventeen-year-olds competing for team USA this year, two of which won gold in snowboarding. Seventeen-year-old Chloe Kim won the women’s halfpipe in her first two runs and finished her third with a score of 98.25. Chloe Kim was named Time Magazine’s 30 Most Influential Teens in 2016 and Snowboarding Athlete of the Year at the USSA awards in 2016. Redmond Gerard won gold in the men’s slopestyle and became the youngest gold medalist in any snowboarding event. Additionally, four time Olympian Shaun White, won the men’s halfpipe competition with a score of 97.75. He was named Best Action Sport Athlete at Snowboarder sitting on top of a mountain.the ESPY awards six times and is the first athlete to win three gold medals in snowboarding. The women’s slopestyle was won by Jamie Anderson who also won silver in women’s big air. Jamie is now the first female snowboarder to win two gold medals. The other members of the United States team who medalled in snowboarding are Kyle Mack, who won silver in men’s big air, and Arielle Gold, who won bronze in women’s halfpipe.
