The first asteroid from outside our solar system has passed by the planets, and is not like anything we have ever seen before! Astronomers at the Pan STARRS telescope in Hawaii first noticed the strange asteroid on October 19th. This telescope is used to scan the the sky to search for potentially dangerous objects, and this is how they found the large object flying through our solar system. After days of tracking, astronomers confirmed that it was indeed an asteroid from outside our solar system and was named Oumuamua. The meaning of the name means “a messenger from afar arriving first,” which is a very fitting title for the asteroid. When observing the objects, you see that the asteroid is a dark reddish color, which is similar to objects found in the edges of our solar system. The asteroid was not surrounded by any gases or ice so the possibility of it being a comet was out of the question. The asteroid also appeared to be 10 times longer than it was wide, which gave it a very odd, pencil-like shape. This is a strange phenomenon compared to any other asteroid in our solar system, and it might lead to a better understanding of the development of the universe. Astronomers also say that the possibility of interstellar objects passing through the solar system is most likely a common occurrence, but they are going too fast for anyone to track. This makes Oumuamua unique, because it was the first one astronomers were able to track and document. Scientists are predicting that they will be able to see even more of these interstellar objects in the future with the increased advance in larger, more powerful telescopes. But for right now, we can just sit back and be grateful that one of these interstellar objects did not come hurling in towards our planet’s orbit!
