There is a new superstar on the rise in the MLB, Shohei Ohtani. This 23 year old phenom has the unique gift of being both a great pitcher and also a great hitter. He has been playing well for the Angels, and has the club’s record for strikeouts, 11, and he accomplished this in just his sixth start. He has won various awards already, including American League player of the week in April.

Many things set Ohtani apart from the competition. He was well known in Japan, where he was born, before he came to the United States to pursue an MLB career. He also throws right handed, but bats lefty, a slight quirk that makes him more unique as well. In Japan, he won MVP awards and has the amazing achievements of throwing the fastest pitch in league history at 102.5 MPH and also winning the home run derby the same year. The 6’ 4” athlete quickly gained an almost legendary reputation in Japan for accomplishing absurd feats such as hitting a ball through the roof of the Tokyo Dome.

Many scouts have been skeptical about Ohtani and his desire to pitch and hit in a line up consistently, which hasn’t been done since Babe Ruth. He believed he could perform at a high level doing both and when the Angels gave him a chance he proved he had what it takes. He throws strikeouts consistently and has been hitting well, especially considering how poorly many major league pitchers hit. His batting average of .348 is very good, and is better than many veterans of the league. He currently has 5 home runs this season which is impressive for any player, and even more given how unique he is. Shohei Ohtani is an extremely rare kind of player who proves that through hard work, any goal can be accomplished. He proved to the doubters he could perform at a high level unlike any of his peers, and could change baseball in the long run by doing so.
